UOB partners OurCrowd to provide equity crowdfunding in Asia

13:52 Mar 09, 2016 GMT +8 - Enterprise Innovation, Enterprise Innovation (Free access)

United Overseas Bank Limited (UOB) has announced a strategic collaboration with a global equity crowdfunding platform, OurCrowd that involves having the bank invest US$10 million in the platform. This collaboration is OurCrowd’s first foray into Asia. The partnership pairs UOB’s strengths  and  depth  of  experience  in  serving  entrepreneurs  as  well  as  small-and  medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across the region with OurCrowd’s expertise in investing in some of the world’s most promising start-ups through equity crowdfunding.Accredited investors among UOB’s clients will also have an opportunity to broaden their investments into OurCrowd’s portfolio companies. This collaboration aims to pair innovative Asian companies with differentiated and highly scalable technology products and services with a source of funding through OurCrowd’s equity crowdfunding platform. Through equity crowdfunding, these Asian companies can seek relatively small investments from a large number of accredited investors in return for equity or shares in their start-up company. The collaboration aims to provide these Asian companies with the funding needed to develop their concepts, products and services into viable business models.  These Asian companies can also tap into OurCrowd’s global investor network to jumpstart international expansion and business development.“As Singapore’s largest SME bank with an extensive regional network, UOB has deep experience from its long-standing support of entrepreneurs, start-ups and SMEs. This collaboration with OurCrowd is a natural extension of  our interest in nurturing the growth of small businesses."“SMEs are the foundation of Asian economies, providing high levels of employment. However, it can be challenging for small businesses to obtain financing, particularly equity financing, in the early stages of growth. Because of this, UOB has partnered with OurCrowd, to connect smart ideas with smart money,” said Janet Young, Head of Group Channels and Digitalisation, UOB."The UOB-OurCrowd collaboration represents a huge step forward for OurCrowd and the Asian tech ecosystem. Together, we will empower scores of new entrepreneurs and match them with global investors and mentor networks,” said OurCrowd Founder and CEO Jon Medved. “The beauty of crowdfunding OurCrowd style is that the investor in Asia can now access quality deal flow in Israel, Silicon Valley and beyond, while a Singapore entrepreneur can easily gain top notch global backing."Sassoon Investment Corporation (SassCorp), the private investment holding company of the Singapore- based Sassoon family, is also investing in the first leg of OurCrowd’s Asian expansion. Description: https://www.asia-first.com/static/img/external-link.gif more

UOB to provide $1 million in funding to 30 fintech start-ups in Asia

03:09 Mar 01, 2016 GMT +8 - Enterprise Innovation, Enterprise Innovation (Free access)

United Overseas Bank (UOB) has announced plans to encourage the growth of fintechstartups in the region via an inaugural 100-day accelerator programme. The programme will be run by The FinLab, UOB’s joint venture with Infocomm Investments Pte Ltd (IIPL) for 30 start-ups.Through The FinLab, UOB is providing each start-up $30,000 in seed money in return for a six per cent equity stake. Each will also receive $400,000 in software credits sponsored by The FinLab’s partners and about $7,000 in complimentary office space. Each start-up stands to receive up to $440,000 worth in cash and benefits in total. The programme will be rolled out in Singapore over three cycles in the next two years, with the first batch of 10 chosen  start-ups scheduled to start in  May this  year.  Each  start-up  should  preferably  have  developed  a minimum viable product for financial solutions in payments, wealth management, customer experience management, big data analytics, mobility solutions and small and medium-sized enterprise banking. The participants will be exclusively mentored by financial institution experts and successful entrepreneurs and will also be given the opportunity to connect with potential investors with the aim of taking their business ideas to market. “We aim to find the most creative and intelligent minds from a range of disciplines, to help us break new ground in making the customer experience more intuitive, relevant and engaging,” said Janet Young, head of group channels and digitalisation, UOB. “We also hope to help the start-ups to become leaders in FinTech innovation.”The FinLab will conduct a series of roadshows in Bangkok, Hong Kong, Jakarta and Singapore to raise programme awareness, with the company anticipating more than 500 fintech start-up sign ups. A selection process will narrow the list down to the 20 best start-ups. These 20 start-ups will then have the opportunity to pitch directly to the selection committee comprising senior bankers and investment professionals from both UOB and IIPL. From there, the top 10 start-ups will then be selected and offered a place.Fully paid sabbatical leave for UOB employees selected for the programmeThe FinLab is hoping to attract UOB employees’ participation in addition to fintech startups. Through a series of internal workshops and hackathons which started in the fourth quarter of 2015, employees have been encouraged to form teams with different skill sets and expertise, and apply for the programme through the standard application process. Should their startup idea be selected, programme participants who are UOB employees will be awarded fully paid ‘sabbatical leave’. “Today, more than ever, banks realise the importance of innovation but often lack the engagement with the brightest disrupters. On the other hand, start-ups often lack the resources and capital to endure the typical two-to-three year sales cycle for selling solutions to financial institutions,” said MD for The FinLab Felix Tan. “This programme… Description: https://www.asia-first.com/static/img/external-link.gif more

Can robot advisers replace human financial advisers?

- AsiaOne (Free access)

Supporters say robo advisers have advantages that can deliver greater wealth for clients. Skeptics say people still want flesh-and-blood guidance. Do investors need people anymore? The past few years have seen the rise of robo advisers, a category that includes not only fully automated investment services and advice but also "hybrids" that pair computerized services with hand-holding from human advisers. The firms generally offer passive investments, as opposed to the active management that a human adviser can provide, but they charge much slimmer fees. Robo advisers have been making aggressive moves lately, slashing the minimum balance required for an account; some have eliminated minimums entirely. Meanwhile, some big investment firms have begun offering hybrid services or are experimenting with fully automated offerings. Some boosters argue that many investors don't need human help at all-robo advisers can handle their portfolio needs and deliver better performance than advisers who may be unscrupulous or simply unable to beat the market. Critics, though, say that digitized advisers may work as a complement to humans, but can never replace the expertise of a flesh-and-blood counselor. Lisa Kramer, professor of finance at the University of Toronto and a member of the board of advisers for Justwealth, a newly launching robo-advisory firm in Canada, makes the case for robo advisers, saying they have advantages that can deliver greater wealth. Scott Smith, director of advice relationships at Cerulli Associates, says robo services don't provide the qualities that people want in an adviser. Yes: Humans often make costly errorsBy Lisa Kramer Most financial advisers are human. And that's a huge problem. Humans come hard-wired with cognitive biases that often lead them to make suboptimal financial decisions. Research shows that people see patterns in data where none exist, they believe they are more knowledgeable or skillful than they actually are, and they overlook potentially important information, even when it's as obvious as a gorilla on a basketball court, as a famous experiment proved. A New York judge just ruled that the FBI can't force Apple to unlock iPhones (AAPL)

06:43 Mar 01, 2016 GMT +8 - Business Insider, Business Insider (Free access)

…Instead, the device in question belongs to Jun Feng, a meth dealer. The government attempted to use the All Writs Act to compel Apple to help it access data on Feng's phone last year, in a preview of the controversy that would explode around San Bernardino shooter Syed Farook's iPhone. Law enforcement found an iPhone 5S during a search of Feng's house. Feng claimed to have forgotten his passcode, and the US Drug Enforcement Administration enlisted the Federal Bureau of Investigation to help it crack what was on the phone. Federal Magistrate Judge James Orenstein, who was overseeing the order, questioned whether the All Writs Act was sufficient legal footing, and publicly asked Apple whether it had any objections. Apple lawyers argued in October that what the government was asking was for the power to force it to break the security on its devices. "We're being forced to become an agent of law enforcement," an Apple lawyer said in court. A senior Apple executive speaking on the condition of anonymity told reporters that the New York case is similar to the San Bernadino case and Monday's ruling should have a "persuasive effect" going forward. During a court hearing, the government argued that Apple had similarly bypassed the lock screen on similar iPhones 70 times before. Feng's phone was running iOS 7, an older operating system that doesn't encrypt its data by default. Even after Feng pleaded guilty, the government tried to compel Apple to provide technical assistance. On Monday, Orenstein ruled in Apple's favor. From the ruling: I conclude that under the circumstances of this case, the government has failed to establish either that the AWA permits the relief it seeks or that, even if such an order is authorized, the discretionary factors I must consider weigh in favor of granting the motion.... As explained below, after reviewing the facts in the record and the parties' arguments, I conclude that none of those factors justifies imposing on Apple the obligation to assist the government's investigation against its will. I therefore deny the motion. SG’s financial services firms braced for more fintech

03:04 Mar 01, 2016 GMT +8 - Enterprise Innovation, Enterprise Innovation (Free access)

Singapore’s banking and financial services leaders are aware their businesses face threats from the fintech space, with many prepared to increase spending to counterfintech challengers, says a survey by recruitment firm Robert Half..The survey involved 400 financial services leaders in four countries – Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan and the United Kingdom, with 100 respondents hailing from Singapore.According to the survey, the biggest impact of fintech felt by financial services firms will come from online investment companies– a threat nominated by 40 per cents of respondents.  Concern about online investment firms among Singapore financial services leaders is well above the global average of 30 per cent. The next biggest impact is expected to be from challenger banks (18 per cent), followed by peer-to-peer lenders (12 per cent).According to the survey, the average increase in spending to counter new technologies is greater among Singapore banks compared to the other countries surveyed.  The average increase in spending across the four surveyed countries is 11.11 per cent, while for Singapore firms the average spending increase is 13.57 per cent.“The power of disruptive technology lies in owning the customer interface, not in owning assets.  A disruptive start-up company makes it easier for customers to access products and services that other companies own or produce,” said MD for Robert Half Singapore Stella Tang. “The challenge to banks and financial institutions is to ensure they do not lose their customers to new firms offering easier, cheaper or more intuitive ways to compare and acquire the financial services they need.”The survey found mid-sized banks and financial institutions (those with between 250 and 499 employees) are more likely to be increasing investment in their own technologies to counter the threat of new entrants. Fifty five per cent of mid-sized firms are increasing the amount they are spending in response to new technologies, compared to 42 per cent of small firms and just 35 per cent of large firms.   “Singapore banks and financial institutions are actively countering this threat by upgrading their own user interfaces and moving more of their interactions to mobile and digital.  That’s why financial services professionals with experience in these new technologies are in high demand,” said Tang. “While the disruptive challengers pose a threat to traditional banks and financial institutions, there is still a long way to go before they topple the established banking hierarchy in Singapore,” said Tang.Survey highlights (click to enlarge): Description: https://www.asia-first.com/static/img/external-link.gif more

Spanish bank BBVA just took a big step in the fintech world (BBVA)

05:06 Feb 27, 2016 GMT +8 - Business Insider, Business Insider (Free access)

Spanish bank BBVA is doing it all it can to embrace the disruptive power of fintech. The bank is building an Open API (application program interface) platform and has created a position within the company called Head of Open APIs to lead it, notes Sarah Kocianski, senior research analyst for BI Intelligence, Business Insider's premium research service. Shamir Karkal the CFO and co-founder of Simple, the digital-only bank that BBVA bought in 2014, will fulfill this role. While some companies are slow to react to fintech, BBVA seems to actually be embracing it. A piece of legislation in Europe called PSD2 that would force banks to reveal their data to third parties through APIs is scheduled to become law in 2018. European banks must construct APIs that meet this requirement by that time, and Kocianski notes that many banks are simply trying to meet the minimum standard. BBVA, however, is trying to take advantage of an opportunity it sees from PSD2. BBVA will start inviting a handful of chosen Spanish partners into a closed Alpha to assist in the creation of the Open API platform. These partners will likely come from the fields of P2P, personal finance management, and biometrics, Kocianski reports. This process would give the partners access to BBVA's resources, but the bank would also benefit from the pool of ideas and talent from the partners. BBVA's approach adds even more credence to the growing belief that established financial institutions and startups must work together in order to move ahead. It's clear that we’ve entered the most profound era of change for financial services companies since the 1970s brought us index mutual funds, discount brokers and ATMs. No firm is immune from the coming disruption and every company must have a strategy to harness the powerful advantages of the new financial technology (“fintech”) revolution. The battle already underway will create surprising winners and stunned losers among some of the most powerful names in the financial world:  The most contentious conflicts (and partnerships) will be between startups that are completely reengineering decades-old practices, traditional power players who are furiously trying to adapt with their own innovations, and total disruption of established technology & processes: Traditional Retail Banks vs. Online-Only Banks: Traditional retail banks provide a valuable service, but online-only banks can offer many of the same services with higher rates and lower fees
